Helping Owners Rebuild Their Relationship with Their Dog
There are few things more stressful than living with a dog whose behaviour has become difficult, or even dangerous to manage.
Perhaps you’re worried your dog might bite someone, or worse.
Maybe every walk ends with barking, lunging or aggression.
Visitors can’t come to your home, your family feels anxious, and you’re constantly wondering what might happen next.
You are feeling overwhelmed, you’re a hostage, but you’re not alone.
Every week we speak with owners who are exhausted, embarrassed, stressed, anxious or frightened by their dog’s behaviour.
Many have already attended obedience classes or worked with other trainers without seeing lasting or sometimes any improvement.
Many have been to the vet, been given the medication, tried multiple medications, still no results.
Some have even been told their dog is beyond help. In most cases, they aren’t.
Our Behaviour Rehabilitation & Residential Training Programs are designed for dogs requiring intensive professional intervention in a structured environment, combined with comprehensive owner education to help create lasting change.
Because we’re not just training dogs, we’re helping families enjoy life with them again.
Is This Program Right For Your Dog?
Our residential rehabilitation programs are designed for dogs experiencing serious behavioural challenges, including:
Not every dog needs residential rehabilitation.
If we believe another service is better suited to your dog’s needs, we’ll tell you honestly.
We have a suite of custom options for you.
Our priority is recommending the approach that gives you and your dog the greatest chance of success.

Why Residential Rehabilitation?
One of the biggest misconceptions about behaviour training is that a one-hour lesson each week is enough to solve deeply established behavioural problems.
The reality is that your dog spends the other 167 hours each week rehearsing the very behaviours you’re trying to change.
Every time a dog practises barking, lunging, pulling, chasing or aggressive behaviour, those behaviours become more established.
Our residential rehabilitation program interrupts that cycle.
For several weeks your dog lives with experienced trainers in a carefully managed environment where every interaction becomes part of the learning process.
Instead of unwanted behaviours being repeated every day, we create thousands of opportunities to reinforce calmness, engagement, confidence and better decision-making.
This intensive approach allows us to achieve far more than is often possible through weekly lessons alone.
There Is No Such Thing As Sending Your Dog Away To Be “Fixed”
If someone promises they can completely fix your dog while you do nothing, they’re not being honest.
Behaviour rehabilitation isn’t magic.
Dogs don’t return home permanently changed simply because they spent several weeks with a trainer.
Long-term success depends on three things:
Our job is to build an exceptional foundation, the best we can in the short time we have.
Your job is to continue it.
That’s why owner education is one of the most important parts of our entire program
How Our Rehabilitation Program Works
Step 1 – Behaviour Assessment
Every rehabilitation program begins with understanding why your dog behaves the way they do.
We assess:
This allows us to develop an individual rehabilitation plan for your dog.
Step 2 – Foundation Skills
Before changing behaviour, we establish communication.
Dogs learn:
These become the building blocks for everything that follows.
Step 3 – Behaviour Modification
Only after strong foundations are established do we begin addressing the behaviour itself.
Depending on your dog’s needs, rehabilitation may involve:
Every rehabilitation program progresses at the dog’s pace while maintaining safety and welfare.
We primarily focus on Antecedent based intervention.
One of the most effective ways to change behaviour is to prevent unwanted behaviour from occurring in the first place.
Antecedent-Based Interventions focus on identifying and modifying the events, environments or situations that occur before a behaviour. By changing these antecedents, we can reduce the likelihood of unwanted behaviour while creating opportunities for dogs to practise more appropriate responses.
Step 4 – Real World Training
Dogs don’t live inside training facilities.
As progress develops, we carefully expose dogs to increasingly realistic environments where they can practise their new skills under professional supervision.
Expect your dog to be walking through towns, parks and other places you might like to go with your dog.
The goal isn’t simply for dogs to perform inside training, it is to help prepare them for life outside it.
Step 5 – Owner Education
This is where everything comes together.
Before your dog returns home, we spend extensive time teaching you. Its not a session, or a moment, it is a COURSE.
Because even the best rehabilitation program succeeds only when owners understand how to continue it.
We will support you.
Program Investment
Our Behaviour Modification Programs are designed for dogs requiring intensive professional intervention and owner education.

Success Stories
Ryder’s Story – Hope When It Matters Most
Some dogs change your life. Others change the way you see what’s possible.
Ryder was one of those dogs.
When Ryder came to K9 Pro, he displayed both dog aggression and human-directed aggression. The only people he trusted completely were his own family.
As a large, powerful Rottweiler, his behaviour was understandably frightening.
Many people looked at Ryder and saw a dangerous dog. Some believed there was only one possible outcome.
His family refused to give up on him.
We refused to give up on him too.
After carefully assessing Ryder, we developed a rehabilitation program built around his individual needs.
Through structured behaviour modification, clear communication, careful management and the unwavering commitment of his family,
Ryder began to learn that the world didn’t always have to be something to fear or fight.
Progress didn’t happen overnight.
It never does.
It was built one small success at a time.
One calm decision.
One breakthrough.
One new experience replacing an old habit.
Over time, those small victories became a different life.
Ryder wasn’t condemned to spend the rest of his life behind fences or isolated from the world.
He wasn’t defined by his behaviour on the day he arrived.
Instead, he went on to live a full, rich and meaningful life with the family who loved him.
His story is a reminder that behaviour is not the whole story.
With the right assessment, the right rehabilitation and owners who are prepared to do the work, remarkable change is possible.
The video below captures part of Ryder’s journey. We made this video years after Ryder worked with Steve, when Ryder passed away.
Steve loved Ryder, and Ryder Steve. We hope it inspires anyone who feels they’ve run out of options to remember that sometimes hope begins with simply asking for help.
Ryders family now have a Herzhund Labrador, yes, we bred her next dog.
We build lifetime relationships here.
Every dog is an individual. While no ethical behaviour professional can guarantee outcomes, Ryder’s story demonstrates what can be achieved when knowledge, commitment and compassion come together.
Hunter’s Story – Beyond First Impressions
If you had met Hunter on the day he arrived, you may have believed there was no helping him.
A powerful Working Line German Shepherd, Hunter had a history of aggression towards both dogs and people. He also had a bite history.
The only people he trusted completely were his own family.
When Hunter first came to work with Steve, it took two adult men to physically restrain him as he tried to get to him.
He was a serious dog.
For many people, that first impression would have been enough to walk away.
Steve didn’t.
Experience has taught us that behaviour tells a story, and before meaningful change can happen, you first need to understand the dog in front of you.
Over time, trust replaced conflict.
Respect replaced confrontation.
A working relationship developed, and, just as it has with so many of the dogs we’ve helped over the years, something special happened.
Steve loved Hunter.
And Hunter loved Steve.
It seems to happen time and time again.
When dedicated owners are prepared to do the work, and they’re supported by the right professional guidance, remarkable things can happen.
Hunter wasn’t defined by the worst moments of his life. He was given the opportunity to learn, to trust and to move forward.
The video below shares part of Hunter’s journey and stands as another reminder that even dogs with serious behavioural challenges deserve to be assessed as individuals, not simply judged by their past.
Hunter’s story reflects what can be achieved through careful assessment, skilled rehabilitation and owners who remain committed to their dog’s future.
We don’t see the dog at its worst, we see what the dog could become.
Jaffo’s Story – When Hope Was Almost Lost
Jaffo was a much-loved family member.
Like many German Shepherds, he had a playful side. He loved his family, loved his ball and, at times, was everything they had hoped for in a dog.
But there was another side to Jaffo.
Whenever someone approached the family home, it was as though a switch had been flicked.
He would explode into aggression.
Over the years, Jaffo forced his way through flyscreens, crashed through windows, escaped crates, slipped leads and bit multiple people. His owners described it as though he completely lost the ability to think.
Once he reacted, there was no reaching him.
Like so many families facing serious behavioural problems, they sought vet help.
Medication was prescribed in the hope it would reduce his anxiety and aggression.
There were moments where things appeared to improve, but those improvements were short-lived.
As time passed, dosages were adjusted and additional medications were introduced, yet Jaffo’s behaviour continued to deteriorate.
Then something happened that changed everything.
One day, Jaffo attempted to attack a member of his own family.
In the four years they had owned him, he had never shown aggression towards them.
His family was devastated.
When euthanasia was recommended, they understood why. They loved Jaffo deeply, but they were running out of options.
Even so, they couldn’t bring themselves to say goodbye without exploring every possible avenue.
That decision brought Jaffo to K9 Pro.
When he arrived, the dog we met wasn’t aggressive in the way many people would imagine.
He was exhausted.
His medication levels were so high that he trembled constantly.
At the owners’ request, and under the guidance of our vet, we gradually and carefully weaned him from his medication before beginning his rehabilitation program.
Only then could we truly begin to understand who Jaffo was.
There were no shortcuts.
No overnight transformation.
Just one day at a time.
One successful interaction at a time.
One millimetre of trust at a time.
As the days and weeks passed, something remarkable happened.
Jaffo began to soften.
He learned to pause before reacting.
He accepted that not every unfamiliar person represented a threat.
He rediscovered simple joys, running across our seven-acre property, swimming whenever he had the chance and simply being a dog again.
When it was time to return home, his family saw something they hadn’t seen for a very long time.
They saw their Jaffo.
His rehabilitation didn’t end when he left us. His family committed themselves to the training with incredible dedication.
They followed the program with consistency, patience and determination, understanding that lasting change comes from daily commitment rather than quick fixes.
It wasn’t always easy.
Progress rarely is.
But together, they gave Jaffo the life he deserved.
Jaffo lived another eight wonderful years after completing his program with us.
He returned every year when his family went overseas on a holiday, he loved everyone here like family.
They laughed when he started to “sing” when they arrived at our drive way.
He was never again aggressive towards his family.
Although he never became a dog who sought out strangers, he no longer felt the need to bark, lunge or bite. Instead, he learned that he could simply choose not to engage and walk away.
Sometimes the greatest success isn’t creating a dog who loves everyone.
Sometimes it’s giving a dog the confidence to make a better choice.
Jaffo’s story reminds us why we never judge a dog solely by its worst moments.
With careful assessment, thoughtful rehabilitation and owners who refuse to give up, lives can be changed.
Not every story ends like Jaffo’s.
But his story is a powerful reminder that hope should never be abandoned before every reasonable opportunity has been explored.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my dog think I’ve abandoned them?
No. Dogs generally adjust well to temporary changes in routine and quickly form positive relationships with our training team while maintaining their bond with you.
We have a “Residential Assessment Stay” where we make sure your dog is ok here before engaging a full program.
Is my dog too aggressive?
Every dog is individually assessed. Some of the dogs we work with have very serious behavioural issues, but not every dog is suitable for residential rehabilitation. This wont be bacause your dog is too aggressive though, we will work with any level aggression.
Will my dog be perfectly trained when they come home?
No ethical trainer can promise perfection.
Our goal is to create meaningful, lasting improvement and give you the knowledge to continue that progress at home. This article can help (https://blog.k9pro.com.au/the-fully-trained-dog/)
How long does rehabilitation take?
That depends entirely on the individual dog. We’ll recommend the program we believe is most appropriate after assessing your dog’s behaviour.
Do you guarantee a fix?
No.
Dogs are living animals, and behaviour depends on genetics, environment and ongoing owner commitment.
What we do guarantee is accurate diagnosis, honest advice, professional rehabilitation, individual training and comprehensive owner education.
Do you ensure that my dog will not be aggressive towards me?
No.
The relationship you have developed with your dog will not change the instant they live here, that will happen when your dog heads home, if you make changes too.
We are here to help the best we can, not make false promises.
